IRE is an independent institute that supports the networking of European regions, as well as regionalization and decentralization in Europe. With its competent contacts for relevant issues and challenges, it contributes to the dissemination of knowledge and interest in European values, culture, and history. The mission of IRE is focused on the development of European regions and the promotion of cooperation and dialogue among the regions of Europe. This is achieved through the organization of expert conferences, scientific studies, initiatives, and publications.

The Institute of European Regions is a non-profit organization based in Salzburg, founded in 2004 by Prof. Dr. Franz Schausberger, the former governor of the Salzburg region. The organization’s primary goal is to create a network for municipalities, regions, and companies from all over Europe to highlight the increasing importance of regions and municipalities in European politics and economic development. Through its activities and initiatives, IRE supports decentralization and regionalization and provides expertise to strengthen these processes.

IRE aims to stimulate the economic potential of European regions. For 20 years, IRE has been working to strengthen regions and communities in a united Europe, with the aim of cross-border initiatives and progress in enlargement policy. International cooperation is considered a fundamental tool for supporting social cohesion and sustainable economic development.

The IRE European network currently consists of over 180 members, including cities, regions, companies, and institutions from 23 countries. Among the members of the Economic Committee are Zumtobel (Austria), Erste Group Bank AG (Austria), Palfinger AG (Austria), Gas Connect (Austria), Bausparkasse Wüstenrot (Austria), the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, and PPP Investment (Serbia).

Every year, IRE organizes the European Summit in Salzburg, which is one of the most important business and political events in both Austria and Europe.
